Forearm tattoos usually completely wrap around the upper arm and run from shoulder down to half of the arm or the elbow. However, many people consider a tattoo that runs from the hand to the wrist or the elbow a forearm tattoo. Likewise, some people consider these quarter sleeve tattoos because the lower part of the arm is smaller in size than the upper part of the arm.
The first step is to determine the location on your forearm where the tattoo will be placed. Determine if you want the upper arm placement. This location will offer you sufficient space to place the tattoo and still be easy to hide or cover if that ever becomes necessary. Another decision that is required is if you want the tattoo on the right or left arm. Usually the size of a person’s principal arm is larger than the non dominant arm; most people choose to have the tattoo placed on the larger space.

The next step is to determine the design that you want for your forearm tattoo. Much the same as tattoos that cover the entire arm from the shoulder to the wrist, a tattoo that covers half of the arm will also flows better when the design is applied throughout the entire tattoo. Therefore, there are many common themes that you can use but it is usually useful to use the themes that you select along with your own designs which will add significance to you and make the tattoo appear more original.

You always want to select the tattoos that provide you with the best appearance. Should you happen to have many forearm tattoos available to look at, you should choose those that flow together. Conversely, you should not consider any tattoo that doesn’t fit with the design that you want. If the part of your forearm is already taken up with a tattoo, you can always find some background to use which will link all the sections of the tattoo into one flowing tattoo. Most forearm tattoos that are preplanned are much easier to design primarily since you are beginning with a new slate. The new tattoo design should be sketched on paper first so that you can make sure that it is perfect before any ink work is done.

Finally, you should discuss you ideas with a qualified tattoo artist. The people who have their own tattoo artist will find it very easy to discuss all of the available options and determine which suits them best.
